  • Therapies that can help disabled people

There are various therapies that can help people with Cerebral Palsy and this area of the site will have information about the different types of therapy

    The main therapies include:

Physiotherapy (Physical Therapy), Ocupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Hydrotherapy

    Physiotherapy

    Physiotherapy

    Physiotherapy (Physical Therapy)

This helps the patient with movement and motor skills. Though an exercise program, Physio helps to strengthen weak muscles and improve mobility.

    Occupational Therapy

This therapy is to help disabled people with there every day tasks and to maintain their independence in their own homes. This is carried out by finding out what difficulties you are having, then an assessing your home environment, and then devising a plan of action as to the best way to help you and providing specialised equipment as is neccessary.

    Speech and Language Therapy

A Speech and Language Therapist will work with the patient to develop there mouth muscles and help develop jaw contol which can improve language siklls. Also by developing mouth muscles and jaw control it can improve the patients swallowing which then can improve their eating abilities. A Therapist can also work with various communication methods and devices for those who have no speech.

    Hydrotherapy

    Hydrotherapy

This therapy is carried out in a heated pool, the heat of the water helps to relax muscles and allows for a greater range of movement. I have had Hydrotherapy many times and have benefited greatly from it. As the water is quite warm the length of time is built up. The first session was 5 minues and next was 10 until I reached 20 minutes. During the sessions I was able to work with my Physiotherapist on various exercises and because of the pain relief I got whilst in the water my mobility and range of movement was much better.
