What is reflux?
Reflux means that the valve at the top of the stomach, the lower oesophageal spinchter is weak and allows the acids and foods etc in the stomach to travel back up into the oesophagus.
Do all babies have reflux
It is believed that most babies are born with a certain degree of reflux, most do not have to have any medical intervention. Others respond really well by using the suggested positioning techniques. Others need both suggested positioning techniques and medication to help control their reflux. In extreme cases, some may need surgery, but it is very rare
Can teething make reflux worse
A A lot of families notice that their child's reflux appears worse when they are teething. Symptoms usually settle back down again after the tooth has appeared in most cases.
How can thickening a feed help my child not to vomit
By thickening the feed, the feed becomes heavier. So when used in conjunction with correct positioning techniques, thickening a feed then has gravity to help it stay down. Plus Infant Gaviscon for example, also coats the oesophagus and then lays on top of the milk in the stomach to form a barrier. This then helps to keep the stomach contents in the stomach.
How can I get my doctor to believe that something is wrong
We suggest to parents that they keep a diary of their baby's symptoms. In some cases, video just a few moments to show to the consultant as most baby's act quite well and happy when at the hospital appointment. This is helpful if you are trying to explain how your child is coping whilst being fed or problems with sleeping.
